If you don’t like Trevenant but still want a Grass/Ghost type, you’re in luck, as there is another set of Pokemon that have that type combination. Pumpkaboo, the Pumpkin Pokemon, is a Pokemon that can be found on the same route as Phantump, that route being Route 16. This Pokemon has a new mechanic: different sizes that determine what stats it will have. There are four sizes: small, average, large, and super size. The smaller Pumpkaboo have more speed and less HP. The bigger ones have more HP and less speed. These Pokemon also have different encounter rates. You are most likely to find average sized ones. Small and large ones have about the same encounter rate as each other. Super size ones are the most difficult ones to find. It can be difficult to know if one is super size or not because they look similar to large ones. There are some differences between them though. The biggest one is its cry. The super size one has a noticeably different cry than the large one. In fact, the large one has the same cry as the average size and small ones do. Don’t worry, if you want more of a certain size of Pumpkaboo, you can breed them. A Pumpkaboo’s offspring will always be the same size as the mother’s size. This may seem like a versatile Pokemon, but should you get one?
Unlike Phantump, Pumpkaboo’s evolution, Gourgeist, cannot be found in the wild (Gourgeist has different sizes, too. The size of the Gourgeist is the same as the size of the Pumpkaboo). So, if you caught your own Pumpkaboo, chances are, it will stay one unless you have a friend who would be willing to trade with you. GTS and Wonder Trade can also be used as well, but there’s some unpredictability there. With GTS, you know you will get a Gourgeist if you can but it may be difficult to get the size you want. With Wonder Trade, you will be lucky to get a Pumpkaboo, and even more lucky if it is the size you want. However, Pumpkaboo has some redeeming qualities. As stated earlier, it can be used in many ways. If you want a speedy or bulky Pumpkaboo, you can do that. Phantump doesn’t allow you to do that in quite the same way. Its regular abilities can be useful (not for battles). It can have Pickup or Frisk, which can be useful to get free items and know if your opponent is holding an item and if so, what they are holding. Its hidden ability can be useful, but only if your opponent is trying to put your Pokemon to sleep. Overall, if you can get past Pumpkaboo’s flaws, it might be a good idea to get one. It can even help you against Olympia if you don’t have a good Pokemon to use against her.
