Dugtrio vs Alolan Dugtrio

Diglett and Dugtrio, the Mole Pokemon, were one of the several Pokemon in Sun and Moon who got Alolan forms. They had an additional Steel type added onto them. Also, instead of Arena Trap, they got a new ability known as Tangling Hair, which has pretty much the same effect as Gooey; it lowers the opponent’s Speed by one stage every time they make contact. But the question is, is this an improvement or not?

Against Hala, regular Dugtrio would have been better. Being a Steel type means it becomes weak to Fighting moves. However, against Molayne, Alolan Dugtrio would technically be better. Steel resists Steel. Alolan Dugtrio still has its Ground type to do damage against his Steel types.

Against Olivia, Alolan Dugtrio would be better. Being a Ground/Steel type means it doubly resists Rock, while also having two different options to beat down her Pokemon.

Against Acerola, they’re pretty much the same.

Against Kahili, Alolan Dugtrio is better. Steel resists Flying and also gives Alolan Dugtrio a way to do neutral damage to most of her Pokemon.

So there you have it, Alolan Dugtrio is an improvement. However, being a pure Ground type has its perks. You wouldn’t be weak to Fighting, Ground, or Fire.
