In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Necrozma gains a new form called “Ultra Necrozma”. The first time you encounter it, it will be level 60 and all of its stats will be raised by one stage. It is a Psychic/Dragon type and has a diverse moveset. It knows Smart Strike, Power Gem, Photon Geyser, and Dragon Pulse. People in the past have had difficult defeating this Pokemon, since it already has a base stat total of 684 to begin with, and with the stat boost, it becomes even stronger. However, something I noticed with its moveset is that even though all of those moves cover a wide array of types, (Dragon Pulse is good for Dragons, Smart Strike is good for Rock, Ice and Fairy, Photon Geyser is good for Fighting and Poison, and Power Gem is good for Flying, Bug, and Ice), all of those moves are resisted by Steel types. Steel types are infamously known for having a number of resistances, and even though they no longer resist Dark or Ghost, that doesn’t matter for this battle, since Ultra Necrozma has no moves with those typings. Of course, even though you have the defensive part, you will also need an offensive part. Luckily, with a Psychic/Dragon typing, it has a few weaknesses. However, some are better than others. Since it’s a Psychic typing, it will be weak to Bug, Dark, and Ghost, and with its Dragon typing, it also becomes weak to Fairy, Ice, and Dragon. Dragon does nothing to cover Psychic’s weaknesses, but it does give it many resistances. So we know a good counter will be a dual type of Steel and one of the types mentioned above. Let’s analyze each one.
Steel/Bug does exist. Forretress, Trash Wormadam, Durant, Genesect, and Scizor are all examples. However, Forretress is the only one that appears before becoming champion or without transferring. However, as a Bug type, it does take neutral damage from Power Gem. This move isn’t STAB for Necrozma, but it still might be a reason not to use it.
Steel/Dark also exists. Bisharp is available, and not only does Photon Geyser become useless against it, but it doesn’t gain any less resistance against its other moves.
Aegislash is the only Ghost/Steel type, and it’s only available through Island Scan. However, it’s still a good Pokemon to use.
For Steel/Fairy, there is Magearna, Mawile, and Klefki. Mawile and Klefki have an immunity to Dragon Pulse, but they also take neutral damage from Smart Strike. Smart Strike isn’t STAB for Necrozma, but it is still something to look out for.
If you have Ultra Moon, you can get an Alolan Sandslash, which is a Steel/Ice type. Similarly to the previous type combination, Sandslash becomes less resistance to not only Smart Strike, but Power Gem as well.
The only Steel/Dragon is Dialga, which I don’t think you’ll be using.
