Pokemon X and Y were lacking in the legendary department. Even though they had one of the legendary birds and Mewtwo, they only released a total of 3 new ones. Most Pokemon games have a “legendary trio” trope, where there are two exclusive legendaries and one that unifies them. For example, Xerneas was only available in X and Yveltal was only available in Y, but Zygarde was available in either version. Sword and Shield is similar in that while it has legendaries from previous games, it only introduced a total of 3 new ones. We have known about two of these legendaries for quite some time, but here’s what you need to know about them.
Zacian is the Sword exclusive, and it is a Fairy type. However, if you give it a unique item called the Rusted Sword, it will also become a Steel type. Zamazenta is similar, but it is a Shield exclusive, the item is instead called the Rusted Shield, and it is a Fighting type. Zacian has a unique ability called Intrepid Sword, which raises its Attack upon being switched in. Zamazenta has a similar ability called Dauntless Shield that raises its Defense upon being let in. That being said, Zacian’s ability isn’t completely unique. The ability Download will raise a Pokemon’s Special Attack or Attack upon being switched in, depending on whether the Pokemon’s Special Defense or Defense are lower. For a Pokemon like Blissey, Attack will increase, whereas for a Pokemon like Avalugg, Special Attack will increase. Although this is not the exact same since Download may or may not raise the Pokemon’s attack, it is worth pointing out because Zamazenta’s ability is more unique, since there is no ability that raises a Pokemon’s Defense upon being switched in. Both Pokemon have a unique move, but only if it has its signature item held. They are both Steel type attacks that deal twice damage if the target is Dynamaxed. With a 100 base power, that means it’ll instead have a 200 base power. Both Pokemon actually can learn the move Iron Head, which will switch to the signature move if they are holding their unique item. Zacian’s is called Behemoth Blade and Zamazenta’s is called Behemoth Bash.
The Pokemon that is common among both versions is called Eternatus, a Poison/Dragon type with the ability Pressure.
