Pokemon Unite: Venusaur

Pokemon Unite released several months ago for the Nintendo Switch and the mobile version came out more recently. Pokemon Unite is a game where teams of 3 to 5 players will choose a Pokemon of their liking in a battle royale that lasts 5 to 10 minutes. The objective is to score the most points, which can be done by defeating wild Pokemon or by defeating the opponent Pokemon. This also gives them experience, which allows Pokemon to get stronger and learn new moves. Teams generally need a balance of different types of roles, of which there are five. Attackers specialize in offense, defenders specialize in defense, supports specialize in helping their teammates or using status moves, speedsters specialize in dealing much damage but at the cost of having poor defenses, and all-rounders are a “jack-of-all-trades”. Pokemon start out with a choice between two moves, getting the one they didn’t choose at level 3, then getting a choice between two moves generally at level 5, then another generally at level 7, and then upgrades to those moves generally at level 11 and 13, respectively. These moves have a cooldown before being able to be used again. Around level 9, the Pokemon learns a Unite Move, which either deals massive damage to the opponents (some only work on a single opponent) or helps your allies greatly. It also increases your speed, defenses, and attacking speed for a short time. This move has a massive cooldown, but by the time you learn this move, it should be ready for use. The cooldown can be reduced by scoring goals or defeating Pokemon. One Pokemon in the game is Bulbasaur, the Kanto Grass starter.

Bulbasaur is a ranged attacker whose basic attack is boosted every third use that slows brings hit opponents inwards. It has a choice between Seed Bomb and Razor Leaf. The first move deals a small amount of damage, but it reaches far. The other move deals many light attacks in a straight line. At level 5, Bulbasaur evolves into Ivysaur, and replaces Seed Bomb with either Sludge Bomb or Giga Drain. The first move creates a circular area where any Pokemon that enter are slowed down and have slightly less special defense, as well as take damage while inside. Even after exiting, they will still take damage from poison for a short period of time. The other move has a wide but shallow reach that restores Ivysaur’s HP if it lands, as well as reducing the damage it takes from moves for a short period of time. At level 7, Razor Leaf gets replaced with either Solar Beam or Petal Dance. The first move takes a bit of time to charge, but it deals much damage to any opponent in its range. The other moves creates a ring of flowers around Ivysaur, which increases its movement speed and deals damage to anyone it hits. Each hit will also reduce the cooldown of its other move. At level 9, Ivysaur evolves into Venusaur, and learns its Unite Move, Verdant Anger. This fires a large seed that splits into pieces, which deals damage to opponents and lowers their speed. At level 11, Sludge Bomb will affect a larger area or Giga Drain will restore more of Venusaur’s HP. At level 13, Solar Beam will take less time to charge and reduces its cooldown of 9 seconds, and Petal Dance will have a wider area of effect. This character also has an ability known as Overgrow, which will increase the power of its move when it is at low health.
