Bowser has the entire Koopa army at his disposal, but eight of them are more important to him than the others: the Koopalings. The first seven of them were introduced to us in the 1998 title Super Mario Bros. 3. In this game, seven castles in seven different worlds were attacked. Each of the castles were taken over by seven of the eight Koopalings. Larry Koopa, the youngest of the Koopalings took over World 1: Grass Land. Morton Koopa, the largest of the Koopalings, took over World 2: Desert Land. Wendy O. Koopa, the only female Koopaling, took over World 3: Water Land. Iggy Koopa, the only nearsighted Koopaling, took over World 4: Giant Land. Roy Koopa, the Koopaling with the pink shades, took over World 5: Sky Land. Lemmy Koopa, the smallest Koopaling, took over World 6: Ice Land. Finally, Ludwig von Koopa, the smartest of the Koopalings, took over World 7: Pipe Land. These Koopalings have appeared in other titles as well, always trying to stop Mario from rescuing the princess and inevitably failing (If you’re wondering what the Koopalings are named after, they are named after famous musicians: Larry was named after Larry Mullen Jr., the drummer of U2, Morton was named after Morton Downey Jr., Wendy was named after Wendy O Williams, lead singer of the Plasmatics, Iggy was named after Iggy Pop, lead singer of The Stooges, Roy was named after Roy Keltson Orbison, Lemmy was named after Lemmy Kilmister, Ludwig was named after Ludwig Beethoven). Bowser’s eighth Koopaling was not revealed to us until the 2002 title Super Mario Sunshine. This Koopaling is much more special to Bowser, as he is actually his only known son (the mother is still unknown to this day). All of the Koopalings are all alternate costumes of the same character. I will be analyzing their set of special moves.
His/her neutral special is the Clown Cannon (no, it does not shoot clowns). This move can deal between 7% damage and 18% damage depending on how long it is charged for. Once it is fully charged, it must be fired. It cannot be charged for any longer after it has been fully charged. In addition, this move can also be pocketed or reflected, but not absorbed.
His/her side special is Clown Kart Dash. This move deals 4% when it lands and 8% damage when it spins out.
His/her up special is Abandon Ship! (yes, the exclamation mark is necessary). This move makes the Koopaling fly out of the Junior Clown Car. The car will fall downwards. If it hits, it will deal about 5% damage. When it explodes, it will deal about 13% damage. This move makes it so that the Koopaling cannot get his car back until he lands, grabs an edge, or gets damaged. However, if you press the standard attack button in the air after this attack, he will swing his hammer around him, dealing about 10% damage or 15% damage. The hammer is powerful enough to launch foes.
His/her down special is the Mechakoopa. This move lets out a Mechakoopa that can walk on its own. If it hits an opponent, it will deal 2% damage to start with, than 9% damage when it explodes. If left on its own, it can explode, which can hurt anyone, even the Koopaling. It can be picked up and thrown. However, if held for too long, it will explode and hurt whoever is holding it. This move can be pocketed or reflected, but not absorbed.
Who is your favorite Koopaling?
