Pokemon Sun and Moon Feature: Pokedex Quests

The Alola Pokedex has many Pokemon (about 300). Anyone who wishes to complete the Pokedex (and get the Shiny Charm) unfortunately needs to have had, at one point, every Pokemon. Some of these Pokemon are legendaries, some of them are Ultra Beasts, and some of them have low catch rates (I’m looking at you, Beldum). Catching 300 Pokemon means you’re going to need many Poke Balls. They’re pretty cheap at only 200 Poke Dollars, and you can even find some around the region, but their catch rate is low. So, to catch Pokemon with lower catch rates, you may need a Great Ball or Ultra Ball, which cost more. Most of your money in the game will have come from defeating Trainers, but there’s a feature in Sun and Moon that rewards you for having a specific Pokemon.

Throughout the Alola region, there are 10 NPCs (three on Melemele Island, four on Akala Island, and three on Ula’ula Island) who will give you a minimum of 3000 Poke Dollars (which is good for 15 Poke Balls) just for having a specific Pokemon. What’s even more convenient is that the Pokemon does not need to be in your party (or in your PC, for that matter) because they only ask for the Pokedex entry of the Pokemon they’re asking for. Here are the listings of the NPC locations, what Pokemon they’re looking for, and what they give in return:

  • Hau’oli City Pokemon Center – Drifloon – 10000 Poke Dollars
  • Route 2 Pokemon Center – Cutiefly – 3000 Poke Dollars
  • Route 3 – Rockruff – 3000 Poke Dollars
  • Heahea City Apparel Shop – Pyukumuku – 10000 Poke Dollars
  • Konikoni City Pokemon Center – Passimian/Oranguru – 5000 Poke Dollars
  • Route 5 Pokemon Center – Feebas – 3000 Poke Dollars
  • Route 8 – Stufful – 5000 Poke Dollars
  • Malie City Apparel Shop – Togedemaru – 10000 Poke Dollars
  • Malie City Library – Alola Persian – Love Ball
  • Route 16 Pokemon Center – Mimikyu – 20000 Poke Dollars

Where you can find these Pokemon:

  1. Drifloon can be found in the Hau’oli Cemetery about 30% of the time in the daytime.
  2. Cutiefly can be found about 20% of the time on Route 2 in the North, Route 3, or about 30% of the time in Melemele Meadow.
  3. Rockruff can be found about 20% of the time in the farthest hollow on Ten Carat Hill.
  4. Pyukumuku can be found about 20% of the time when Surfing on Route 7 or Hano Beach.
  5. Passimian or Oranguru can be found about 5% of the time in the Lush Jungle, depending on whether you’re playing Sun or Moon, respectively.
  6. Feebas can be found by fishing on Brooklet Hill. If you’re fishing normally, you will only have about a 1% chance of finding one. If you’re fishing on a bubbling spot, that chance increases to about 5%.
  7. Stufful can be found about 5% of the time on Route 8 or Akala Outskirts.
  8. Togedemaru can be found about 10% of the time on Blush Mountain (Tip: Bring a Pokemon with Magnet Pull and put it at the front of your party).
  9. Alola Persian cannot be found in the wild. However, Alola Meowth, its pre-evolution, can be found about 30% of the time at the Trainer School and Route 2, about 20% of the time in Malie Garden, or about 10% of the time in Hau’oli City and the Hau’oli City Shopping District. Alola Meowth evolves with high friendship.
  10. Mimikyu can be found about 5% of the time in the Thrifty Megamart.

All of the money from these missions will get you 69000 Poke Dollars (that’s 345 Poke Balls, 115 Great Balls, or 57 Ultra Balls). If you find you’re low on money, go catch any of the above Pokemon and show them to the respective NPCs (or, if you’re already caught them, you can just go and collect your money).
