Tapu Koko, the guardian deity of Melemele Island, is an Electric/Fairy type, just like Dedenne. I will be talking about what it is, its name, how to find one, and its usefulness.
Tapu Koko is based off the Hawaiian god Ku, which is the god of war and conflict.
Tapu means “sacred” or “holy” in Hawaiian while “Koko” sounds like a rooster’s crowing, which is what Tapu Koko’s mask is shaped like.
Tapu Koko can be found in the Ruins of Conflict after you become the champion of Alola. If you’re not able to catch it, it will respawn after you defeat the Elite Four again. It will be found at level 60 and will know the moves Nature’s Madness (a Fairy type version of Super Fang), Discharge, Agility, and Electro Ball. It should be worth noting that 2 out of 3 of Tapu Koko’s attack moves are Electric, so bringing a Ground type into battle would be a good idea.
Its ability, Electric Surge, puts up Electric Terrain for five turns. When this is up, the following effects take place:
- It prevents affected Pokémon from being afflicted by sleep or Yawn.
- If an affected Pokémon is already drowsy due to Yawn, it is prevented from falling asleep.
- Rest will fail if used by an affected Pokémon.
- It boosts the power of Electric-type moves used by affected Pokémon by 50%
- Nature Power becomes Thunderbolt
- Secret Power can cause paralysis
- Camouflage makes the user Electric type if they aren’t already
- Pokemon with Surge Surfer (which is currently only Alolan Raichu) will have their speed doubled
How useful is Tapu Koko? Its Fairy type doesn’t do anything to protect its weakness from Ground moves, but its Electric type makes it take normal damage from Steel type moves. It’s weak to Poison and Ground, and strong against Water, Flying, Dragon, Dark, and Fighting. Giving this Pokemon at least one Electric move (preferably a physical one) is a must, but giving it some moves to take of Ground types is a good idea as well. If you’re going into a double battle, I highly suggest you bring an Alolan Raichu so that it can be twice as fast when you send Tapu Koko out with it.
