How to Hunt: Turtonator/Drampa

Turtonator, the Blast Turtle Pokemon, is a Fire/Dragon type introduced in Gen 7. It is a Sun exclusive, and it can be found on Blush Mountain between level 27 and 30. The ones that are level 27 or 28 will know Iron Defense, Flail, Endure, and Incinerate. The ones that are level 29 or 30 will have Flamethrower instead of Incinerate. Drampa, the Placid Pokemon, is a Normal/Dragon type introduced in Gen 7. It is Turtonator’s counterpart, and it can be found in Mount Lanakila between level 42 and 45. If it’s level 45, it will know Fly, Dragon Pulse, Extrasensory, and Safeguard. If it isn’t, it will know Dragon Breath instead of Fly. Turtonator and Drampa have the lowest call rates in the game, so SOSing for a shiny one can be difficult. But I will be going over what the best team and strategy to hunt both of them will be.

There are a few factors that can increase how often a Pokemon will call (although for the Pokemon that have call rates of 0, this will not work). The less health the “caller” has, the more likely they are to call. In addition, using an Adrenaline Orb will increase the call rate. Using a super effective move on the called in Pokemon will also increase the call rate. There are also 3 abilities that increase the call rate: Intimidate, Unnerve, and Pressure. These are the only ways to increase the call rate. Keeping this in mind, which Pokemon should you use?

For Turtonator, you should use Hidden Ability Tyranitar. You can get one from hordes in Pokemon Y. Tyranitar’s hidden ability Unnerve will increase the call rate, and its Rock typing will resist Flamethrower/Incinerate and Flail. Plus its Rock type moves are super effective, which will also increase the call rate. Another alternative is to use Aerodactyl, as it can get Pressure, it’s available in-game, and its Rock type.

For Drampa, you should use Mawile. It’s available in X, Y, and Omega Ruby. Its regular ability Intimidate will increase the call rate, and its Steel typing will resist Extrasensory and Fly while its Fairy typing will nullify the damage from Dragon Breath and Dragon Pulse. Plus its Fairy type moves are super effective and will also increase the call rate. Another alternative is to use Granbull, as it can get Intimidate, it’s available in-game, and it is Fairy type. It will not resist Extrasensory, but since Drampa doesn’t get STAB for that move, it won’t deal that much damage anyway.
