Hawlucha, otherwise known as the Wrestling Pokemon, is a unique Pokemon. No other Pokemon has its type combination of Fighting/Flying. It was also the only Pokemon that could learn the move Flying Press by normal means, but now Pikachu can learn this move when it is in its Libre form. Nonetheless, Flying Press is a unique move as well, as it is currently the only move that has two types. Dual-type Pokemon have been around since the first generation. In fact, the first three Pokemon in the National Dex are dual-type Pokemon. However, dual-type moves are a new feature that can change how people think about battling. However, since Flying Press is currently the only dual-type move, it is not much of a strategy to just use this move. But this does not mean that other moves may be introduced that are dual-type or old moves can be changed so that they can have two types instead of just one. Flying Press is a Fighting/Flying move. Fighting and Flying do not share any types that they are both effective or not effective against, so Flying Press isn’t all that useful of a move. It would be cool if Muddy Water became a Ground type move in addition to being a Water type move as well because it would be 4x effective against Rock types, Fire types, and 16x effective against any Pokemon who have both of those types (Sorry, Magcargo). It may even be more effective if there were other multipliers such as rain, if the attacker was holding a Mystic Water/Water Gem or a Soft Sand/Ground Gem.
But that’s enough about Flying Press and dual-type moves. Hawlucha may be a useful Pokemon to have. It can cover many types. If you’re having trouble against Grant, a Hawlucha may help. It can also help you against Korrina, Ramos, Wikstrom, and maybe even Wulfric. Its abilities aren’t the best, but I would suggest getting one with Limber. You may not have trouble with paralysis throughout your journey, but you will probably only be able to utilize Unburden in a few situations. Since the item has to be used, it will only help you once in a battle. If Hawlucha is withdrawn or defeated, the effect is lost. Plus, the item has to be usable, so items like Black Belts and Sharp Beaks won’t work. Its hidden ability isn’t terribly useful either. But, it’s still a useful Pokemon. It will at least be level 19 when you get it, meaning it will know Encore, Aerial Ace, Roost, and Wing Attack. If you really want a pure Fighting type move, you can get a Heart Scale and give it to the move relearner in Dendemille Town and have Hawlucha remember Karate Chop. Otherwise, you can wait to level 44, when it learns Hi Jump Kick. Alternatively, you can have Hawlucha learn Rock Smash, Focus Blast, or Brick Break from TMs.
