Pokemon Sun and Moon: Incineroar

The Fire type Starter for Alola, Litten, starts out as a pure Fire type Pokemon. It then evolves into Torracat and then into Incineroar. When it evolves into Incineroar, it gains a secondary Dark type. Although this Dark type doesn’t provide any coverage for its weaknesses, it does provide it an immunity to Psychic type Pokemon users such as Faba. It also makes it useful against Ghost type users, such as Acerola of the Elite Four. Plus, although Fire has three weaknesses while Water only has two, Fire is a better type to use offensively. Fire is super effective against four types (Ice, Steel, Grass, and Bug) while Water is only super effective against three types (Ground, Rock, Fire). One of the challengers of the Elite Four is a man named Molayne, who specializes in Steel type Pokemon, so Incineroar might be a good Pokemon to use against him. Plus, although a Fire type and Dark typing is not unique, it’s the only fully evolved Starter in Alola that currently exists, since Houndour and Houndoom are not available until Pokemon Bank for Sun and Moon comes out. As I said in a previous post, Decidueye does not have a unique typing in the Alola region, because Dhelmise and Phantump/Trevenant are available in game. And although I still believe Primarina is the best Starter, not only does it not have a unique typing, Marill/Azumarill and Tapu Fini (who is arguably a better Primarina, since it has the same typing but better stats) are both available in the Alola region. Of course, only Azumarill is available in the regular story mode, but still. So, let’s say you didn’t choose Litten for whatever reason. What options do you have if you need a Fire and/or Dark type?

For Fire types in the Alola region, you have:

  • Arcanine
  • Flareon
  • Talonflame
  • Salazzle (Salandit’s evolution)
  • Alolan Marowak
  • Magmar
  • Torkoal
  • Turtonator (Sun exclusive)

And for Dark types:

  • Alolan Raticate
  • Alolan Persian
  • Alolan Muk
  • Mandibuzz (Moon exclusive)
  • Sableye
  • Umbreon
  • Pangoro
  • Krookodile
  • Absol
  • Weavile
  • Sharpedo
  • Honchkrow

So, even if you didn’t pick Litten, you have some options if you need a Fire or Dark type. However, getting two separate Pokemon for each of those types means you’ll have one less space in your party. Maybe you didn’t need that space, but are there any Pokemon that are similar to Incineroar, at least when it comes to moves?

Arcanine and Flareon both can learn Bite by leveling up and Magmar can learn Faint Attack by level up. These moves both have equal power, but Bite has a 30% chance of making the opponent flinch while Faint Attack never misses. Bite is a better option for faster opponents, since flinching only works if the opponent attacks after you. Arcanine would be a better option since it is faster than Flareon. Although Flareon’s attack is 20 points higher than Arcanine’s, its Speed is 30 points less than Arcanine. If you can get a fast Eevee (a Hasty nature would be best), then it might be better to use Flareon (don’t evolve a Timid Eevee into a Flareon).

If you want a Growlithe, they can be found on Route 2 about 20% of the time. If you want your Arcanine to know Extreme Speed, evolve Growlithe at level 34. Otherwise, you should wait until level 45. If you want a Flareon, you should evolve your Eevee at level 20. If you want a Magby, then can be found at the max level of 19. If you don’t want to evolve your Magby, they can be found about 15% of the time when a Magby does an SOS call.
